Physiological sleep includes alternate REM and NON-REM stages. REM stages are characterised by the oneiric phase of sleep and are essential for an effective and efficient rest. In the first few months of life, infants have not yet developed circadian rhythms that allow us to regularise sleep and waking patterns: the production of melatonin is essential to this end.
